You’re doing a yoga pose that puts pressure on your tummy, and all of a sudden you feel the air passing out of system. Has that happened to you? Well, yoga farts are common, and you need not feel embarrassed about it. It’s natural and happens to everyone.
Why is farting during yoga normal?
Health Shots got in touch with Himalayan Siddha, Akshar, Founder, Akshar Yoga Research and Development Centre, who told us that farting during yoga is natural and common, and there should be no shame attached to it.
Akshar says, “Farting during yoga is considered to be a normal phenomenon as all the air within the body gets balanced. This is a characteristic of a healthy digestive system. Farting and the passing wind is a sign of a healthy gut.”
However, you can improve your gut by working on techniques that can promote a healthy digestive system.
Why shouldn’t we hold the gas even if we’re in a public place?
Well, not all yoga poses that create pressure on the stomach should be avoided in order to prevent the issue of farting when practicing yoga. Since farting is merely a normal function of releasing excess gas, it is not advised to hold them in. Besides, farting is healthy!
Akshar says, “In the case of any severe digestive issue, it is advisable to avoid practicing yoga till you are healed. Because continuing to perform yoga postures can aggravate the issue by causing acid reflux in the body.”

He adds, “It is important to note that farting every once in a while is completely normal, but any kind of continuous passing of wind is perhaps not suggestive of a healthy system.” So, consult with your doctor.
How to avoid farting in a morning yoga class?
Ladies, as we’ve already told you, passing gas or farting, is a normal and natural procedure of releasing extra air through the intestinal tract. Perhaps there is a slight sound and an unpleasant smell when someone farts, which makes those situations uneasy. Due to this, many people search for advice on how to stop or prevent farting in public. What’s important to remember is that you must allow gas to be released initially.
Still, if you wish to prevent a gas holdup while doing yoga poses, let’s look at some suggestions.
4 tips to avoid farting while performing yoga, shared by Akshar:
1. Do not eat before practicing yoga
To avoid the issue of farting during a morning yoga class, it is best to not practice immediately after consuming a meal. A minimum gap of 1 hour is considered to be safe and gives the body enough time to digest, or at least start the digestion process.
2. Consume a healthy meal
Another way to curb this problem is by consuming a healthy meal during the night. So cut down on gas-producing foods such as broccoli, whole grains, dairy products, pasta, potatoes, and soft drinks.
3. Practice yoga on an empty stomach
It is ideal to practice yoga on an empty stomach as you will be able to gain the benefits of your poses without any issues.
4. Do not practice yoga with digestive issues
Furthermore, only those who are healthy should come to a practice session on an empty stomach. If you are already suffering from existing conditions such as acidity and gastric problems, practicing yoga on an empty stomach might not be helpful in this situation.
