12 feminine hygiene practices to consider while using a public loo

Personal hygiene, for a majority of individuals comprises mundane chores such as brushing, flossing, bathing, and disinfecting. But maintaining good personal hygiene goes beyond avoiding unpleasant bodily odors and poor breath. Women need to pay particular attention to feminine hygiene practices.

While the market may be flooded with personal hygiene products, but the chemical-laden products are not widely recommended for use. A few basic procedures are what the vagina requires.

There are some top feminine hygiene practices that every woman should practice regularly.

A public toilet or a workplace toilet is not one of the cleanest places. Using it comes with its set of apprehensions, considering it can lead to chances of gut infection, Urinary Tract Infections, viral infections and skin infection. The chances of contracting these infections may be more with public toilets usage but one, but one should not hold the bladder or the bowel movements.

Dr. P Tanuja, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecologist, Aster Prime Hospital, shares some do’s and don’ts

1. Check the door handle. Do not touch the door handle directly. Always ask the cleaning staff to clean the door handle frequently.
2. Check the toilet seat and more often use a toilet paper to clean the seat before use.
3. Toilet seat sanitizers are always safe to use.
4. Flush the toilet and touch the flush only with a tissue.
5. Always Wash hands properly after using toilet.
6. Do not use jet sprays too close to the genital areas. If you are using them, it would be better to sanitize the
tip of the tap too.
7. Use sanitary pads, tampons and menstrual cups instead of cloth during periods.
8. Change the sanitary pads frequently in every 3-4 hours. 9. Check the dustbin if it is emptied frequently by the office staff and fresh garbage bags are used every day.
10. Check if floor cleaners are used every day.
11. Always use fresh towels. After usage, wash and replace towels and washcloths. Since germs can stick to a towel surfaces, it is not a good idea to reuse towels.
12. Smelly perspiration and other discharges from your genitalia can be managed by consuming plenty of fresh, wholesome meals and water. These can help your vaginal discharge retain their natural pH, keeping everything in balance and smelling fresh.

Contrary to conventional thinking that a visit to a gynecologist is only necessary when anything is wrong, it is advised to make frequent visits even if nothing
seems out of the ordinary.
